SDSB presents Research Seminar on Gendering Global Finance by Dr. Adrienne Roberts
Abstract
In this talk, the speaker will explore two related but at times contradictory dynamics: (1) the ways in which global financial flows and processes of financialisation are inherently gendered; and (2) the ways in which the extension and deepening of finance has been posited as a means of increasing ‘gender equality’ globally. Rather than positing these developments as either entirely positive or entirely negative, the aim of the speaker is to draw attention to the paradox that emerges as the gendered effects of financial crises and the responses adopted by state actors are being increasingly well documented at precisely the same time as the liberalization of financial flows and the power of financial firms to shape social agendas is being legitimised by certain gender equality discourses. That is, just as it is becoming more and more clear that financial crises, austerity policies and unconventional monetary policies have disproportionately negative effects that are felt along gender (and class) lines and undermining the sustainability of social reproduction, gender equality is being used in instrumental ways that may do more to entrench than to challenge existing gender hierarchies.
Speaker’s Profile
Dr. Adrienne Roberts is a Lecturer in International Politics at the University of Manchester, UK. She has written and published extensively as an international political economist and is the author of Gendered States of Punishment and Welfare: Feminist Political Economy, Primitive Accumulation and the Law (published by the Routledge RIPE Series in Global Political Economy) and is currently working in the areas of gender, debt, finance and financialisation.
